On November 15th, in honor of Native American Heritage Month, we are popping bottles with Kitá Wines, the first winery and vineyard run solely by tribe members.

Though we firmly believe BIPOC should be celebrated year-round, this month-long holiday is a great time to celebrate the cultures, traditions and histories of Native people, and to acknowledge their important contributions.
Located in Lompoc within Santa Barbara County, Kitá Wines was founded by The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. According to Wine Enthusiast magazine, it is the first winery and vineyard run solely by tribe members. All grapes are grown on tribal land and Tara Gomez is the continent’s first recognized Native American to make wine for her tribe from a vineyard it owns.
You might recall we posted about Kitá Wines on Instagram a couple of months ago:
The really exciting news about this event is that we are offering two options for this tasting: virtual or in-person. Please keep reading to find out more information about each option.
IN-PERSON TASTING
Join us at Kitá Wines in Santa Barbara County on Sunday, 11/15 at 2 p.m. for a tasting led by the Kitá Wines staff and a meet & greet with Tara. Due to COVID restrictions, our maximum group size is 15 guests. We nearly sold out during our pre-sale for people who have attended our previous events, but if we have enough interest, we will set up a second appointment time (please sign up for the waitlist on Eventbrite).
For those interested in attending in-person, you can either make a weekend out of it or just come up for the day! The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner is a great and affordable option for a day-trip to Santa Barbara. We will also be coordinating a dinner on Saturday night, as well as a breakfast on Sunday morning for whoever would like to join.
If you are concerned about COVID exposure, please know that this is something I take very seriously. We will practice social distancing and will require masks at all times, except while eating or drinking. Additionally, all those who attend will be asked to be tested prior to the trip.
If you are interested in the in-person meetup, please register on Eventbrite and pay a deposit to hold your spot. Your deposit will go directly to tasting and transportation fees from Downtown Santa Barbara to the winery, which is an hour away. Deposits are nonrefundable and any unused funds will be used to support our organization’s event costs.
IN-PERSON WAITLIST
If the in-person tickets are sold out and you’d like to be added to our waitlist for a second group tasting on Sunday, 11/15, please select this ticket option on Eventbrite.
VIRTUAL TASTING
If you are unable to join us at the winery, we would love for you to pop bottles with us virtually! We will send wines to your home and send you a Zoom link so that you can be part of the event. Please review this website to determine whether wineries are able to ship wine to your home. Please send us an email if you’re unable to receive wines, we’d still love to find a way for you to be part of the event.
Register on Eventbrite and pay the deposit to confirm your participation. The deadline to order wines for delivery is 11/1. Your deposit will go directly to your wine order. Deposits are nonrefundable and any unused funds will be used to support our organization’s event costs.
SHOW SOME LOVE
This “ticket” option is for those who can’t make it, but want to show your support through a donation. Thank you for supporting we pop bottles and our mission to promote diversity in the wine industry!
As always, if you have any questions, please send me an email!
